GREECE

Our school is situated in Evosmos, an area in the west part of Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece.

We are a small sized school, as there are 121 pupils enrolled, with six classes in total and 10 teachers. Our pupils are between 6-12 years old. The school population is predominantly white Greek with only a child from migrant families. The school caters for a small percentage of children with special educational needs. The school is equipped with computers, data projectors in every classroom and internet access. As the unemployment rate is high in the area, we have a significant number of children coming from economically disadvantaged families. As the area where the school is situated has attracted a lot of residents over the last decade, the number of the pupils studying at our school is increasing rapidly.

Our school has successfully taken part in European projects (a Comenius Regio and an Erasmus+ project). These have given us a taste and flavour for these projects and we would like to continue our involvement in them. Our teachers have also taken part in etwinning projects having set as a goal to help our students gain knowledge, develop skills and become multilateral personalities.

We are the first public school in Greece where chess was officially introduced in the school curriculum. We have also created a chess club for pupils in our area, with lesson taking place in the school premises. Mr Aristeidis Paterakis, the school head teacher, is a general teacher, founder of the chess club, a Master’s degree holder and an ICT adult trainer. A number of general teachers and specialists will also be implicated in the project always embracing innovation in the field of education.
