Agrupamento de Escolas D. Filipa de Lencastre (AEDFL) is located in a medium-high socio- economical area, in the heart of the municipality of Lisbon. AEDFL consists of a total of about 1870 students from kindergarten to secondary education and has 146 teachers.
The different levels of schooling (kindergarten, primary school and secondary school) are distributed in three buildings, respecting the different characteristics and requirements of each age group, ranging from 3 to 17 years. EB S. JOÃO DE DEUS is the primary school of AEDFL providing elementary education to about 400 children from 6 to 10 years old.
The curriculum offer includes the official curricula defined by the Ministry of Education for primary and secondary education. The school includes children with different special educational needs trying to help them to be as successful as possible. The families expectations are very high. However, very formal curricular structure becomes a factor in the lack of student motivation, sometimes affecting school results. Thus, it is a constant concern of teachers to seek different teaching methods to stimulate student interest and increase learning to learn. AEDFL understands its students as whole persons to be developed, thus caring both at their academic knowledge and inner growing.
Simultaneously, it is just as important to prepare students for 21st century demands, by providing them with the opportunity to go through multicultural experiences which can be acquired by enrolling students and teachers in international projects. Thus, and for at least the past ten years, our school has been involved into a bilateral students’ exchange program, five Asia-Europe Foundation projects, two Comenius projects directed at different learning levels, and two main eTwinning projects, from one of which the school was granted a flag. At national level teachers enroll students in other creative projects, thus allowing students to have an active intervention
